Bohler has proudly supported the Capital Challenge event for more than six years, volunteering as an engineering mentor to teams of graduate students from Washington, D.C. metro area universities. Each team is challenged to create a strategy for maximizing the potential of an actual development in the area, while receiving advice from industry professionals. For their efforts, the winning team is awarded a $10,000 scholarship.

This year’s case study examined Roadside’s redevelopment of the historic 1.2 million SF Fannie Mae campus, to be known as City Ridge, in Northwest D.C. It is planned to include 250,000 SF of commercial space, 750 residential units and DC’s first Wegmans as the retail anchor.

Senior Design Engineer Rachel Boots represented Bohler and coached the team from Johns Hopkins University. Rachel regularly met with the students and offered advice from an engineering perspective as they developed their plan for the site. The team also received insight from other project team mentors, including developer BF Saul, architect Cooper Carry, contractor Clark Construction, broker Brandywine Realty, and financier PNC.

Bohler remains passionate about participating in this event, as it allows our professionals the rewarding experience of supporting future industry leaders and cultivating their understanding of the development process.
