The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) recently honored Arlington County, VA with its first LEED Platinum Community designation, under a newly-unveiled pilot program, LEED for Communities.
Arlington County has been committed to improving the quality of life for residents since the 1960’s, with a vision of creating sustainable living by taking control at the local and private-sector level.
With Arlington County in the backyard of Bohler’s Washington, DC and NoVA offices, our team has been involved in many of its development projects over the last 30 years. We continue to be an integral partner in progressing the county’s commitments to sustainability and pushing the edge further ourselves. All Bohler’s projects in the area have been designed to achieve some level of LEED certification.
In a recent example, The Tellus, a LEED Gold-certified, apartment complex redevelopment, received a DESIGNArlington 2017 Award of Excellence for open space/landscape architecture, public art, and new construction.

One of the first residential buildings in Arlington to receive LEED Gold certification
Bohler implemented sustainable design elements including innovative bioretention and green roof design for the building’s plaza. Additionally, the stormwater management methods were designed to not only meet but exceed local and state requirements. With the site credits attributed to our team’s design, the project surpassed its initial goal of achieving LEED Silver certification and ultimately secured Gold. Our team provided survey, civil engineering, permitting and some landscape architecture services for the project.
With the roll out of numerous sustainable development policies and programs, Arlington County has welcomed over 30 LEED-certified developments in recent years, including The Tellus, that are saving millions of kilowatt-hours of energy and gallons of water each year. In fact, even with the addition of new buildings and residents since 2006, the county’s overall energy and water consumption has decreased. Bohler is committed to supporting Arlington’s continued progress towards achieving its sustainability goals.
